CHEF LUIGI PARTICIPATES IN FARM TO SCHOOL WEEK Al Tiramisu Chef Teaches Kids Farm Fresh Eating
WASHINGTON, DC – Chef Luigi, from Al Tiramisu restaurant located in Dupont Circle in Washington, DC is participating in DC Farm To School week as part of Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Organization to fight childhood obesity. “It is always wonderful to work with children to teach them healthy eating habits and introduce new foods,” said Chef Luigi Diotaiuti. “We will show them how to harvest some delicious greens and vegetables for a salad, a protein based entrée that you can make n 10 minutes at home and a nice smooth dessert-of course everything Italian!” The D.C. Farm to School Network works to get healthier, local foods into Washington, DC school meals, and engage D.C. schoolchildren in the farm-to-table process. The Network is housed in the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture - a new non-profit organization working to create a more equitable and sustainable local food system in the Washington, DC area. Chef Luigi will be cooking at Arcadia Farm as part of field trips for students. Arcadia has a sustainable farm located on the historic Woodlawn estate in Alexandria, VA and their mission is to improve the health of our community and the viability of local farmers, and to preserve the environment for future generations. Arcadia Farm field trips are designed to connect students with where food comes from, while developing critical skills and meeting age-appropriate curriculum standards. Field trips include a hands-on farm experience and an optional interactive chef demonstration. After a field trip, students will be able to make the connection that healthy, fresh food comes from the earth, and will understand the process of growing food sustainability. Students will be familiar with and recognize specific fruits and vegetables, so that they will be more likely to eat those foods when they see them in the cafeteria or at home.
